IFS Therapy
A Different Way of Relating to Yourself
Many people come to therapy because they feel caught in patterns that don’t seem to change, no matter how much insight or effort they bring. They may understand why they feel or act a certain way but still can’t shift it. Others find that traditional talk therapy, though helpful in many ways, keeps them circling around the same story without moving deeper into real transformation.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) offers another path. Instead of focusing only on analyzing thoughts or recounting life events, IFS invites you to explore your inner world in a more compassionate and curious way. It’s not about “fixing” yourself but about building a new kind of relationship with the different parts of you that carry pain, fear, or that work tirelessly to keep you feeling safe.
What Makes IFS Different from Traditional Talk Therapy?
Most forms of talk therapy emphasize problem-solving through intellectual conversation: identifying distorted thinking, challenging beliefs, or practicing coping skills. These approaches can be very useful, but sometimes they stay at the surface level.  IFS works differently. It’s based on the idea that our minds are made up of many “parts,” each with its own feelings, perspectives, and strategies. For example:
- A part might be critical.
- Another part may feel like a child overwhelmed, lonely, or scared.
- Another part may distract with food, scrolling, or other quick fixes to cool overwhelming feelings, even if you feel worn out afterward.
Traditional talk therapy might try to manage these feelings. IFS instead helps you deal with them. The goal isn’t to silence, suppress, or override these parts, but to listen and understand why they do what they do.
The Self
At the center of this process is what IFS calls the “Self.” Self is not a part: it’s the authentic core of who you are, the calm and compassionate inner presence that can relate to all your parts without judgment. When IFS therapy helps you connect with Self, you begin to lead your inner system from a place of clarity and confidence, rather than from fear or reactivity.
Finding Clarity
What to Expect In an IFS Session
IFS sessions look a little different from traditional therapy conversations. Instead of only talking about your experiences, your therapist may guide you to notice what’s happening inside in real time. You might close your eyes, turn your attention inward, and connect with a part of you that feels anxious, angry, or stuck. With your therapist’s support, you’ll learn to:
- Identify the different parts of you showing up.
- Listen to what each part wants you to know, without judgment.
- Understand how parts have been trying to help you, even if their strategies cause pain.
- Heal the burdens that parts have been carrying so they can take on new, healthier roles.
This is not about reliving trauma or forcing yourself into places you’re not ready to go. It’s a gradual, compassionate process guided by your pace and your capacity in the moment.
How IFS Brings Lasting Change
One of the most profound aspects of IFS is the discovery that no part of you is “bad” or broken. Even the parts that feel destructive or shameful have an important story to tell and a role they’ve been playing for your survival. As you get to know them, your inner relationship with these parts will shift. Instead of fighting against yourself, you begin to feel a sense of inner harmony you may not have known was possible.
Over time, people often notice:
- A quieter inner critic and a softer, kinder self-talk.
- Less reactivity and more choice in difficult moments.
- A deeper sense of wholeness and self-acceptance.
- The ability to be present in difficult relationships without old patterns taking over
This kind of transformation can’t always be reached through insight and coping skills alone. By directly engaging with your inner system, IFS opens new doors to healing that many find life-changing, especially when other approaches have fallen short.

Is IFS Right for you?
If you’ve been in therapy before and felt like you were talking in circles, if you’ve learned coping strategies that don’t feel like enough, or if you sense that there are deeper layers inside you longing to be understood, IFS may be the approach you’ve been searching for.
It doesn’t ask you to abandon everything you’ve tried. Rather, IFS builds on your strengths and the wisdom you’ve already gained. IFS offers a way to transform your relationship with yourself so that true, lasting change finally becomes possible.
